Help Families Make Homeschooling An Option
Dekalb Christian Home Educators was founded in 1989. The goal of this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is to supports under-resourced homeschooling families seeking to intentionally craft an educational journey for their child that addresses academic, emotional, and physical development.
Our financial model is a participatory membership model where families pay $125 annually and contribute ten parental engagement hours. This model creates built-in staffing using mission-aligned volunteers. Thus, 104 member families equal 1040 work hours. We do not collect tuition for classes. The individual parent-instructor or provider is a contractor and pays DCHE a $5 per student host site fee per semester. All field trips have a 15% coordinating fee. We receive monies by hosting events, academic fairs, an annual homeschool conference, and a curriculum book sale. Since 1989, all these monies have covered the administrative overhead. No grant monies were received until after the pandemic. Our 2021-2024 grants and sponsorship awards total $140,600.
What is the need?
According to the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), more than 3.7 million homeschooled students are in the United States. Georgia has the third largest homeschool population of 85,510. According to the 2019 Census, Black families were 3.3% of the homeschooling population, and by the fall of 2020, the population had increased to 16.1%. Now, Black families are the fastest-growing homeschool population in the United States.
How We Are Changing Education
Pioneers of the Parent-as-Educator Movement
We are powered by parent genius. We equip parents as educators with accessible teaching opportunities. We support parental agencies in identifying appropriate learning opportunities that value the parents’ professional experience, educational credentials, areas of interest, and racial/ethnic identity. We provide a platform for homeschooling parents with a minimum graduate degree and 18+ hours in the subject matter to be dual credit instructors for their students.
