I am Keicha Barnum but to my students, I am Mrs. B. Ordinarily I would be referred to as the founder of BCR TechED, however, those who know me would probably say that the title of an architect would be more fitting. I have used my degree, certifications in technology and design, and experience in the corporate world and as an entrepreneur to design a more impactful framework for STEAM education that teaches students to learn by “doing”. For more than 10 years I have partnered with talented instructors, created innovative hands-on curricula, and brought the coolest technology to students who have never used a 3D printer, coded a drone, or even dreamed of creating a 3D animation. The result – is a blueprint for a uniquely geeky educational community equipped to inspire the next generation of STEAM professionals.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s office started its first educational C.H.A.M.P.S. program at DeKalb County School District’s Toney Elementary School in Decatur. “Our mission is to provide an educational program for Georgia’s youth which provides guidance and the skills, ability and knowledge to be safe, healthy, and happy in preparation for a successful life,” DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann said. The C.H.A.M.P.S.─ Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety─program started in DeKalb County Aug. 23 but was founded in 2003 by the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association to address social issues faced by young people. DeKalb County Deputy Keith McNeil will teach the class and cover topics such as the harmful effects of alcohol and drug use; bullying; consequences of good and bad decisions; avoiding gang activity; managing peer pressure; coping with stress; and avoiding violent behavior in conflict resolution. “[McNeil], a certified instructor for this 12-week program, is also experienced in guiding and mentoring young people in the DeKalb community. As a popular juggler off duty, he relates well with young people,” said Mann. According to the sheriff’s office, the C.H.A.M.P.S. program can help students progress into adolescence and encourages parents to participate through class workbook projects and discussions on lessons. The program targets fifth graders and is taught each school day for approximately an hour. All instructors must be certified in the program. According to the Georgia Sheriffs’ website, the program will eventually extend to middle and high schools. “We are delighted and honored to have [McNeil] educate [DCSD] students on such important subject matter,” said DCSD Superintendent R. Stephen Green. “McNeil’s expertise as a law enforcement officer will play a pivotal role in fulfilling that commitment… We are delighted the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has chosen to partner with us.”
