News and Notes for Homeschool Week 2025

ALL Homeschool Week participants must register in advance.  Walk-ins and registrations on January 8 and 9 are not permittedRegistration will close December 13, 2024.   Be sure to register everyone from your family who plans to participate in Homeschool Week, as sibling participants will not be allowed to walk in or register on January 8 and 9.

Students may register for ONE Homeschool Week date only.   If your children cross the grade divisions below, you may register older children on a younger day to avoid making multiple trips to the Bar; younger children may not register for older days.  As in past years, families must register individually.  We do not accept group registrations from homeschool community leaders for Homeschool Week.

The Law-Related Education program staff has chosen a law lesson and mock trial for each Homeschool Week day.  They are listed below with a brief description of each.  High school students are welcome to attend on January 8 or 9; however, the law lessons and mock trials will be at elementary and middle school levels.  Registration for both dates is first-come, first-served.

Harluck v. Righteous

Bill of Rights: Students will gain a better understanding of the Bill of Rights, specifically the first eight amendments. They will get to test their knowledge of the amendments by playing “Name the Amendment.” See if rights were violated through different scenarios. At the end of the lesson there’s a “Bar Exam” for students to take!

In B.B. Wolf v. Curly Pig Big Bad Wolf sues Curly Pig for damages for injuries he suffered while trying to come down Curly Pig’s chimney.

Criminal and civil law: Students learn the major differences between criminal law and civil law and then look at some of the different categories of crime in Georgia, including crimes against a person and crimes against property. At the close of the session, they take a short “Bar Exam” to test their ability to differentiate between criminal and civil cases.

In Hardluck v. Righteous a ballerina is permanently disabled after being struck by a speeding boat while she was swimming at the lake.

Journey Through Justice Important Reminders

Our program is designed for students in grades 4 – 12; no child younger than 4th grade will be allowed in the classroom or courtroom.  Parents with younger children should make alternate arrangements for those children, or arrange, in advance of your arrival at the Bar, for another group parent to take responsibility for your older child(ren).  In the latter case, you must complete the parent drop-off form before leaving the Bar.  Click on the link below to access the form.  Adults taking responsibility for students other than their own children may not leave the Bar until the student’s parent has returned to pick them up.

Students and adults should bring a sack lunch (do not order food to be delivered); we will provide soft drinks.  We do not have a refrigerator, microwave, or vending machine available.

The LRE staff will assign speaking roles on the day of your tour.  Students will prepare for the mock trial during lunch, and speakers do not need to memorize their parts.  Students requesting speaking parts should be fluent readers, as the trial goes more smoothly, and the students enjoy it more, if speakers are not stumbling over the words.  Speaking parts will not be available for every student who requests one; however, students who do not have speaking parts will serve as jurors.

We look forward to seeing you and your students in January!

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. ~Isaiah 41:10~
