Apologetics: The Art of Embodying Love (High School)
Grades: 9th - 12th Course Description: Christian apologetics may be simply defined as the defense of the Christian faith. This course will approach apologetics from a holistic perspective. Inspired by Jesus' words in John 13:35, "By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another," this class will seek to anchor students in the principles and methodology of Jesus' approach to testifying to the faith. The focus will be to help students understand the centrality of love in Christian practice and witness. This course will explore doctrines such as the Gospel, the Trinity, and sanctification while also investigating the values of justice, service, sincerity, and kindness. Students must truly understand what they believe before they can defend it. "Apologetics: The Art of Embodying Love," which will be offered in Fall 2024 is part one of an intended two-part course. The fall semester will focus on establishing a biblical theology of love, as well as exploring the various ways it has served both the credibility and testimony of Christianity throughout history. "Apologetics: Testifying to Hope," which will be offered in Spring 2025, will focus on intellectual and philosophical defenses of the faith, but with an emphasis on being winsome as opposed to argumentative. The second semester will explore elements of Christian belief that are often deemed "controversial" and discuss various ways to engage said doctrines in the public square. While not mandatory, I highly encourage students to commit to both the Fall and Spring semesters. This course is designed as a cohesive two-part journey, and it will be assumed that all students in the second part have completed the first and all students in the first part are planning to continue to the second. This commitment ensures a comprehensive learning experience.
